Our Mission

Our mission is to partner with homeschool families to provide enriching, hands-on educational experiences that are often difficult to create at home, while living out our calling to be a city on a hill—a visible light rooted in Christ. Through purposeful learning, strong community, and character development, we seek to cultivate curiosity, growth, and meaningful connection, equipping students to shine with wisdom, integrity, and faith as they pursue lifelong learning.

Matthew 5:14-16

"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven"

Kaleo  envisions a vibrant learning community where students discover their passions, develop confidence in their abilities, and embrace a lifelong love of learning. By partnering with homeschool families, we aim to create an environment that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and collaboration—empowering students to grow academically, socially, and personally. Our vision is to inspire young learners to explore widely, think deeply, and contribute meaningfully to their communities and the world around them.

Our Vision

Lorianne Porcelain

Founder and Director

My husband, Daniel and I have been married for 18 years and blessed with two children whom we have homeschooled since kindergarten. Our family’s journey has shaped our belief that education is most meaningful when rooted in faith, family, and relationship. As homeschool educators with over 25 years of experience working with children, we strive to create an environment where children can thrive as individuals while being surrounded by a christ centered community.

Our Approach to Education, Discipline, and Community

At Kaleo, everything we do is rooted in Christ.

We are a non-denominational, Christ-centered community committed to walking alongside families as they educate and raise their children. We believe learning, character, and faith are deeply connected—and that children thrive when they are known, prayed for, and supported as whole people.

Christ at the Center of Kaleo

Our faith is not an add-on. It is woven into the everyday life of Kaleo.

  • We incorporate a Christ-centered worldview into all of our curriculum

  • We teach through the lens of biblical truth, love, and grace

  • We hold regular chapel gatherings

  • We pray intentionally for our students and families—by name

Our approach is rooted in loving Christ, loving people, and living out our faith with humility and sincerity. We are not aligned with a specific denomination, but we are deeply committed to following Jesus in how we teach, lead, discipline, and care for children.

Coming Alongside Families

Kaleo does not replace home education.

We exist to:

  • Support families in their homeschool journey

  • Provide community, collaboration, and enrichment

  • Share the work of educating children without taking over the role of parents

Parents remain the primary educators. Kaleo is here to walk with you, offer support, and help build the village homeschooling was never meant to do alone.

Educating the Whole Child

We believe children are created in God’s image and deserve to be educated with care, dignity, and purpose.

Our whole-child approach includes:

  • Academic growth

  • Emotional awareness and regulation

  • Social development

  • Spiritual formation

  • Confidence, curiosity, and resilience

Children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and loved—and when expectations are clear and consistent.

Our Discipline Philosophy

Discipline at Kaleo is designed to teach and restore, not punish.

Children are still learning how to:

  • Process emotions

  • Communicate needs

  • Navigate relationships

  • Respond to challenges

When difficulties arise, we create space for children to understand their emotions, reflect on their actions, and learn healthier ways to respond.

Intentional Emotional Support

Kaleo provides a designated “Need a Minute” space for children who need time to regulate or reset.

This space:

  • Includes couches and calm seating

  • Is used for emotional regulation, not punishment

  • Allows children to step away briefly and return ready to learn

Children may need:

  • A quiet moment

  • A listening ear

  • Reassurance

  • Rest after a hard day

Learning to recognize and respond to emotions is part of growth—and we believe children should be guided through that process with patience and care.

Individualized Care & Pattern Awareness

Our discipline support is guided by Serena Martinez, whose background is in social work.

When a child is struggling, Serena meets with them to:

  • Talk through what happened

  • Explore what they may be feeling

  • Identify what support they need in the moment

She keeps internal notes solely to look for patterns, such as:

  • Repeated struggles in the same class or subject

  • Challenges connected to certain peer dynamics

  • Signs of fatigue, overwhelm, or frustration

These records are not labels or punishments. They help us make thoughtful adjustments—always with the goal of setting the child up for success.

Our Non-Negotiables

Creating a safe, Christ-honoring environment is essential.

The following behaviors are strictly prohibited and considered one-strike offenses:

  • Bullying

  • Inappropriate or sexual language

  • Physical harm or threats of harm

If any of these occur:

  • Parents will be contacted immediately

  • The child will not be permitted to return to Kaleo

This policy exists to protect our students, families, and staff—and to ensure Kaleo remains a place where children feel safe, respected, and cared for.
